Invented in 1929, the French Press remains one of the easiest and most reliable ways to brew a delicious cup of coffee. Its charming, old-school design adds a touch of elegance to any kitchen. This method is perfect for making full-bodied coffee, whether for one person or multiple servings.
What You'll Need
French Press coffee maker (34-ounce / 1-liter)
61g of freshly ground coffee
Grinder (optional, if you prefer to grind your own coffee)
Hot water (30 seconds after boiling, approximately 205°F / 96°C)
Scale
Timer
Spoon (a standard tablespoon works well)
Step by step
1. Preheat the French Press
Pour a small amount of boiling water into the French Press and swirl it around to warm the sides of the carafe. This step helps maintain the temperature for optimal coffee extraction.
Discard the water after preheating.
2. Add Coffee
Measure 61g of coffee and grind it to a coarse consistency, similar to sea salt crystals.
Add the ground coffee to the pre-warmed French Press.
3. Add Water and Brew
Place the French Press on the scale and set the weight to zero.
Start the timer and slowly pour hot water into the French Press until it is
filled.
Let the coffee steep for 3 minutes, then stir the mixture gently with a
spoon.
Place the plunger on top and allow the coffee to brew for an additional
minute, bringing the total time to 4:00 minutes.
Slowly press the plunger down to filter the coffee.
4. Serve and Enjoy
Pour the coffee immediately into your cup (a ceramic mug is
recommended) to prevent over-extraction, which can cause bitterness.
